A Lafayette man was arrested following an incident that took place last Friday.

Ariel Hever Ortiz, 22, faces multiple charges after he allegedly ran into Memaw's Grocery, which is located on Scottsville Road in Lafayette.

According to the arrest report, Macon County Sheriff's deputy Jason Bohanan was dispatched to Memaw's Grocery for a wreck involving a vehicle that ran into the store building. As Bohanan was en route to the store, he met the vehicle and pursued it after initiating his blue lights, though the vehicle traveled approximately two more miles down the road and also ran over a mailbox. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Ortiz exited the vehicle, and the report states that there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from Ortiz. After identifying himself, Ortiz told Bohanan that he had consumed one quarter of beer, and he was unsteady on his feet.

Ortiz submitted to a breathalyzer test, and his reading came back at .109.

Ortiz was charged with failure to exercise due care, failure to give immediate notice of an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, evading arrest and vandalism.

His bond was set at $18,000, and his court date is slated for Sept. 5.
