Macon County Junior High’s Hayden Wix elevates for a second-quarter layin in front of Winfree Bryant’s Jaden Wilson. Wix scored a team-high 8 points in the Tigers’ 37-22 loss last Thursday.

The Macon County Junior High boys basketball team started slow for the second consecutive game and suffered the same result last Thursday evening, dropping a 37-22 contest to visiting Winfree Bryant.

The Tigers didn't score in the first quarter, which is the same thing that occurred in the team's season opener against visiting East Robertson (in a 29-19 loss) three days earlier.

"They played a 1-3-1 (zone) just like East Robertson," Macon County head coach Wes Clayborne said. "We talked about it. We couldn't take it from talking about it to putting it out there (on the court).

"When you're not scoring, you have to do something. You have to find ways."

The Aviators led just 5-0 entering the second quarter. Kaelin Horton's 3-pointer was the only field goal in the opening period.

Nate Green finally broke the Tiger scoring drought by sinking two free throws 20 seconds into the second stanza.

Dalton Hudson sank a 19-foot jump shot at the 2:24 mark, pulling Macon County back to within five points.

However, Winfree Bryant forced a series of turnovers late in the first half, resulting in a 9-0 run to conclude the half. Horton's putback gave the Aviators a 19-5 lead at halftime.

"They scored six or eight right before half," Clayborne said. "It took the lead that was closer and extended it.

"We couldn't ever get anything going (offensively)."

A Parker Maddox layin and a Hayden Wix 3-pointer midway through the third period trimmed the deficit to 11 points.

However, Winfree Bryant responded by scoring the final eight points of the quarter, stretching the lead to 30-11.

"Defensively, they cause us problems," Clayborne said. "That turns into their offense."

Wix made a 3-pointer to open the fourth-quarter scoring, but Macon County (0-2) didn't get any closer than 16 points.

Wix scored a team-high 8 points.

Larquarrius Tally and Horton led the Aviators offensively with 12 and 9 points, respectively.

The Tigers were slated to play at Mt. Juliet on Tuesday and will host Upperman on Thursday.
