Summer assignments

By Hailey Pippin

Prompt: Write an essay in which you argue for or against giving summer assignments to students. Be sure to support your argument with logical reasons.

Do you think students should have summer assignments? I think students should have summer assignments. The first reason for this is because many students forget what they were taught the year before. My second reason is because the teachers have to review everything that was taught to the students last year. The last reason that students should have summer assignments is that the students will get an early start to the next year of school, and they will have more time to study. These are my reasons for students having summer assignments.

During summer, lots of students forget what they were taught the year before. This makes the students fall behind. Other schools that give summer assignments normally don’t go through this. The kids have to review what they were taught. This brings me to my next reason.

Teachers of the next grade have to review the standards of the grade before. The students will have to relearn what they can’t remember. The class will then be slowed down. This often means that there will not be enough time to teach all of the standards of that grade. In the years to come, students will have to review what they forget in the summer, learn the things they didn’t get to the year before, and the students will still have to learn the standards for that year.

If students did receive summer assignments, they could get an early start to the year. The students wouldn’t have to review much. This also means they probably had time to learn the standards last year, leaving them with more time. This time could be use on the standards of that year. If the school gave the students summer assignments, they would most likely have time for the students to learn everything they needed to know.

In conclusion, I think summer assignments are great. Students wouldn’t forget anything. The teachers wouldn’t have to review as much. The students would get an early start to the year, leaving more time for the actual standards of that year. Overall, summer assignments would be a great thing to have.
