Luci Allen a senior at Macon County High School recently competed at the Appalachian Fair Sheep show in Gray, TN in Northeast Tennessee. Youth from across the south eastern U.S. attend and exhibit livestock at this Regional fair. Exhibitors from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia participate annually.
The shows are very competitive with youth showing Registered Breeding sheep, Commercial ewes (females), and Market Lambs. Luci exhibited 11 head of sheep at this show winning Grand and Reserve Hampshire Breeding ewes, Grand Champion Shropshire Ewe, Grand champion Shropshire Market Lamb, Reserve Champion Hampshire Market Lamb, Grand and Reserve Champion Black face cross market lambs and Reserve overall Market lamb.
The highlight of the sheep show is the senior showmanship contest where exhibitors in grades 9-12 compete for college scholarship funds of $ 1,000.00. The two judges of the show Bill Buckland of Indiana and Randy Hall of Illinois evaluated approximately 15 senior exhibitors for one hour in the show ring. In a close contest among many fine exhibitors Luci walked away with the Champion Showmanship award.
