Macon County School Board meets

The Macon County School Board met in regular session on Thursday, November 10 at Red Boiling Springs School. All members were present for the meeting.

Motion was made to approve the board agenda as presented. Motion carried.

Motion was made to approve the consent agenda, which included: approval of minutes from the previous meeting, four leave requests, and two trip requests. Motion carried.

Motion was made to authorize the posting of a new Second Grade Teacher position at Central Elementary School. Director Tony Boles stated that the school is very close to having to hire another second grade teacher due to current enrollment numbers. Boles also stated that this position would not be hired unless the enrollment numbers continued to climb, stating that the school system is only seeking applications at this time just in case the creation of another teacher position is warranted. Motion carried.

In appearance requests, Westside Elementary School Principal Angela Marshall addressed the board to announce that Westside had raised $26,000 at their recent fall festival. Marshall thanked everyone that donated and participated in the festival.

Technology Director David Flynn also addressed the board to discuss the E-Rate, CIPA Policy. Flynn stated that the school system did have all requirements in place already to receive E-Rate technology funds.

In old business, motion was made to hire Tamara Beckman as the school system auditor for the 2016-17 school year. Motion carried.

In new business, motion was made to approve fundraisers for Macon County High School Girls’ Soccer team and Macon County High School Service Learning. Motion carried.

Motion was made to accept the donation of a golf driving range at Macon County High School. Motion carried. Boles stated that someone in the community had agreed to pay for all of the costs associated with the construction of the driving range and there would be no expense to the school system. Boles and the board members thanked this anonymous person for their generosity to the MCHS golf program.

Motion was made to approve to advertise for a floor covering for the gymnasium floor at Macon County High School. Motion carried.

Motion was made to approve early graduation for Macon County High School student Kirston Meachum. Motion carried.

Motion was made to approve salary equity distribution for the 2016-17 school year based on number of years experience. Boles stated that the funds will be distributed based on years of experience if funds are received from the State of Tennessee. Motion carried on roll call 5-0.

Motion was made to approve Director Boles to present a proposed raise for the Macon County Board of Education Board Members to the County Commission. The raise will be $50 per board member. With the raise, the pay for board members will increase from $100 to $150 per regular meeting. The pay for the chairperson will increase from $150 to $200 per regular meeting. Motion carried.

Motion was made to approve the Textbook Committee for the 2016/17 school year. Motion carried.

Motion was made to approve the LEA Compliance Report for the 2016/17 school year. Supervisor of Instruction Shawn Carter stated that every school in the district was in compliance as well as the entire district. Motion carried.

Director Boles added that there were no findings or recommendations found during the recent comptroller audit. Boles stated that the audit was very thorough and that the comptroller was very satisfied and complimentary of how well everything went.

Motion was made to adjourn. Motion carried. A Building Committee Meeting was scheduled for Monday, November 14. The December Work Session is scheduled for Thursday, December 1. The December Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 8. All of these meetings will be held at the Macon County Board of Education Central Office at 6:00pm.
