A Lafayette resident was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on Tuesday after a property line dispute that allegedly ended in shots fired. The March 5 arrest of Billy Gammons, age 65, was for an incident that took place the Wednesday before, in which, according to police reports, Gammons shot up in the air, pointed a gun at another man, and shot after the man as he was attempting to leave the scene.
Detective Donnie Crawford of the Macon County Sheriff office said that Gammons became upset that a logging team was cutting down trees on land that he believed was his own. Apparently the dispute over a property line had been ongoing. Daniel Hooten was a member of the team employed by Rich Logging Company to log this neighboring property, which is owned by Nera White.
“The landowner [White] has it fenced off and [the loggers] were inside the fence line,” said Crawford. “Mr. Gammons has property adjacent to that, and he was thinking they were cutting logs on his property, so he went and took a shot, and that’s when it got bad.”
The arrest report states that while Hooten’s back was turned and he was cutting a tree, Gammons shot up in the air behind him. It also says that Gammons pointed the gun at Hooten while Hooten was returning to his vehicle, and then took a shot in Mr. Hooten’s direction, hitting his truck in the driver’s side rear fender. Crawford said that Hooten then returned fire in self-defense, using a pistol that he kept in the truck, but “nobody hit nobody.”
Gammons was assigned a $25,000 bond amount, and posted bail soon after his arrest. His court date is set for April 3, 2013.
