The Macon County Board of Education met in regular session on Thursday night, December 6. It was an unconventional meeting, as it was held in the Macon County High School cafeteria, and was preceded by a small banquet for members of the sports teams that were to be honored for their notable acheivements this year.
The MCHS girls and boys golf teams, the MCJH football team, MCHS girls cross country and MCHS cheerleaders were all honored with resolutions from the board, for winning and placing in State-level competition, and, in the case of the MCJH football team, for pulling out an undefeated season.
Other items on the agenda:
The Board presented plaques to outgoing Board members Ronald Birdwell and John Wheeley for their service.
The Board engaged in a long discussion with George Ennis of Lafayette, who had zoning concerns about his son’s children, residents of Clampett Hollow Rd. who are zoned for a different Elementary district than they’d been told by realtors. The Board explained the necessity of enforcing zoning decisions, but promised to review zoning maps, which had been in place since before any current members began their service on the board.
Old Business
The Board approved revision to policy 5.701 Substitute Teachers on 2nd ready. The revision consisted of adding back a section that had been left out of the new version regarding Supervisory Personell. The section requires that absent Principals and Vice Principals be replaced by full time staff members such as Coaches, rather than substitute teachers.
The Board approved to revise a policy regarding school board meetings, board agenda and meeting structures on 2nd meeting. The revision originated with TSBA, and only meant the institution of electronic meeting attendance twice a year.
New Business
The Board held back the 2012-2013 school year Certification of Compliance for further review and clarification during next month’s work session.
The Board discussed the renewing of Margaret Oldham’s contract for another year. Oldham, Macon Co. Schools Director, stated that she did have the intention of serving one more year, as her health seemed to permit. With her assent, the board was free to vote on pursuing the development of the contract, which will be voted in on a later date.
