• Odell and Carolyn Langford of Red Boiling Springs celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Sunday, May 27, 1956 in Mayfield, Ky.

• Sherry Massey, a second grade teacher at Central, was surprised to tears when she found out she’d been voted Favorite Teacher of the Year by students, parents and other teachers.

• Mary Rogers retired from the Hardee’s in Lafayette after serving as a cook for 17 years.

• Master Sergeant George M. “Mike” Scott, a 1980 graduate of Macon County High School, retired from the Air Force on May 1 after serving on active duty 22 years, two months and 22 days.

• The Macon County Junior High School softball team finished its season with an 8-3 record.

• Holllis and Janice Harrison celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at the Sally Wells Building on May 7.

• The United States Achievement Academy announced that Lafayette’s Matt Wilson had been named a U.S. National Award Winner in Mathematics and Science.

May 1983

• The General Assembly had passed a private act whereby the Mayor of Lafayette would receive a salary of $15,000 per year and council members would receive a minimum of $600 per year.

• The Lafayette City Council agreed to make an offer of $75,000 to the Stella Green Heirs for 62.5 acres of land adjacent to the Lafayette Industrial Park on Coolidge Road.

• A Red Boiling Springs man was charged with the breakin at Reed Bray’s Grocery on Highway 151 near RBS.

• Red Boiling Springs High School was to graduate 44 students and Macon County was to graduate 129 in May.

Lafayette Boy Scout Troup 405, under the direction of Jon Wells, won the Elmer Haun Troop Award for the third consecutive year.

• Mr. and Mrs. Buie J. Massey celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

56 years ago

May 1954

• Forty-four members of Macon County High School’s Class of 1954 received diplomas. Following graduation exercises, it was learned that T.C. Simmons, principal since 1948, was leaving to be the principal at Allen County High School in Scottsville, Ky.

• An enjoyable birthday dinner was held at the Red Boiling Springs home of Claudie Center.

• Of those 44 graduates, there was one – Audie Lee Cothron of the Highland section of the county – who had never missed a day of class, from first grade through graduation.

• Mrs. Ila Day, an experienced beauty shop operator, had opened a beauty shop in her home at Webbtown. She had been one of the operators of the Bonnie Belle Beauty Shoppe.
