The Lafayette Fire and Rescue Dept. spent Saturday morning conducting exercise based training on Relay Pumping. While most of the county was sleeping in, or preparing to go Hwy 52 ‘Yard-Saleing’, the Lafayette Fire Dept was already hard at work.

Relay Pumping is used when excessively long lays of hose are needed to reach fire scenes or when immediate additional water supplies are needed for attack pumpers which are already low or out of water. In Relay Pumping an extra pumper apparatus (relay pumper) is connected in line between the attack pumper (the one actually fighting the fire) to manage and boost water pressure from hydrants.

Relay pumping techniques are used infrequently in Lafayette, but they were used during the Lafayette Laundry fire a few weeks back. Due to such infrequent use, this training was made mandatory and conducted to assure that all firefighters with the Lafayette Fire Dept. are capable and competent to use these techniques when needed.
