One woman and four juveniles were transported to Sumner Regional’s ER after a head-on collision in Lafayette.

Margaret Blankenship of 7770 Akersville Road was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup northbound on Akersville, about five miles outside of central Lafayette. A 2011 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by Stephanie Gleason of Gunner, TX and containing four underage passengers, was headed south on Akersville. TN Trooper Danny Fisher, who worked the wreck, said that the woman went slightly off the ditch side of the road and overcorrected, crossing the center road line and hitting the pickup head on.

The truck was driven backwards and the other vehicle spun around, coming to rest in front of the truck, facing the same direction. “I think speed is going to be a factor,” said Fisher. “It had to be going pretty fast to push that truck backwards.”

The five passengers of the Pathfinder were transported by ambulance to Sumner Regional Hospital. The woman driving the vehicle had the most serious injuries, Fisher said; she sustained a compound fracture in her leg.

Fisher acknowledged the hard work of response units from Macon EMS, Sheriff Department, and Fire Department: “They do a lot and don’t always get thanked.”
