Lafayette Police Department officers confiscated over an ounce of marijuana and a large assortment of drug paraphernalia from a man at the Fred’s Pharmacy on Thursday after responding to a routine shoplifting call.

A Fred’s employee told police that s/he saw Terry Allen Shelton, 29, put an item inside his jacket in the store, and asked him to remove it. The employee then asked Shelton to go to the middle of the store and wait, whereupon Shelton went to the back of the store and removed another item from his jacket and put it on the shelf. The employee then asked Shelton to pick the item back up and take it with him to the middle of the store, and he complied.

LPD officer Cpl. Henry Behr and K9 handler Clint Hestand responded to the call. All items were returned to the store. Behr said that after they interviewed the subject, they did a K9 run around his vehicle, which is normal procedure. “The dog alerted on every side of the vehicle,” Behr said.

Inside, the officers found bagged marijuana and the other paraphernalia pictured, along with some Xanax pills. Terry Allen Shelton, 29, is being charged with possession of a Schedule 6 drug (marijuana), possession of a Schedule 4 drug (Xanax), and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also received a criminal summons related to the shoplifting incident.

Shelton is not a Lafayette resident, but is staying with family in town.
