Freda was born on Friday, October 2, 1942, one of two siblings of the late Nemo and Pauline Gregory Halsell. On April 14, 1989, she married Maynard Pate, who survives. In August of 1956, she joined the Smith Chapel United Methodist Church. Freda was the valedictorian of the Red Boiling Springs High School Class of 1960. She later received her Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in secondary education and biology having the highest grade point average out of 136 graduates from the Tennessee Tech Class of 1963. She was the biology teacher and the girl’s basketball coach at Macon County High School from 1965 – 1966. Freda was an outstanding basketball player for Red Boiling Springs High School and was inducted into the Red Boiling Springs Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for her many achievements. She was an Executive Director of the Cordell Economic Opportunity Cooperative in Cookeville, TN for several years and later was the former deputy director of the Upper Cumberland Development District.
Survivors besides her husband, Maynard of 22 years include: daughters & son-in-law, Charla & John Zalewski, Leslie Palk all of Cookeville, son, Greg Biles, Lebanon, granddaughter, Holly Palk, grandsons, Jacob, Nick and Ben Zalewski, brother & sister-in-law, Fred & Martha Halsell, Sneads Ferry, N.C.
