As the first quarter began, RBS looked ready to roll. However, so was Clay County. The first quarter was a huge defensive stand by both teams, and it looked as if no points would be scored. Fate had a different idea. With 8 seconds remaining on the clock, RBS went to punt the ball. The ball was snapped, and it soon flew over the head of the punter. Clay County would pick the ball up in the endzone and score, just as time expired. That score made it 7-0.
The second quarter proved to be a lot more interesting. After a fantastic return by Terrence Alexander, RBS had the ball on the 11 yard line! After fighting for 10 tough yards, Coach Kyle Shoulders pulled a trick out of his play book. Instead of running it with a running back, Coach Shoulders decided to let lineman C.J. Taylor run the ball up the middle for the score! It was then 7-7. However, Clay County would score after a 50+ yard pass, making it 14-7. RBS would get the ball back with about a minute left. After a hard push, RBS got the ball to the 50 yard line. Then disaster struck. RBS would throw a bomb towards the endzone, only it was caught by a Clay County player. Clay County would then return the interception 70 yards and score just as the buzzer went off, making it 21-7 at the half.
RBS would get the ball back in the second half, and score almost automatically on a run in by Ty Tuck, which made it 21-13! Then, the RBS defense turned on. Terrence Alexander would intercept and, after a long run on offense by A.J. Dale, RBS would score again! They would fail, however, on the two point conversion, making it 21-19.
The fourth quarter was a heartbreak for RBS fans. Clay County scored with 3:30 left in the game and made it 28-19. RBS would drive all the way down to the 1 yard line, but would come up short. After the game, you could see the disappointment on Coach Shoulder’s face. You knew he wasn’t disappointed in his team, but merely at the result. Coach Shoulders did say that his team played hard and that RBS started the game off slow. “Mistakes got us”, he would later say.
