An uninhabited home at 2451 Hwy 10 S burned Tuesday morning. The fire was called in by a passerby who was driving past the house and noticed flames coming out of one side of the house.
The fire originated in bedroom, and in addition to damaging that side of the house, billowed smoke into the attic and roof areas, as well as other rooms int he house. Lafayette firemen got the flames under control within an hour of arrival.
Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs said that the house is in Mark and Teresa Shelton’s name, and at press time, he had not been able to get in touch with the couple. The cause of the fire, he said, is under investigation.
“It’s kind of a weird deal,” Scruggs said. “looks like someone walked out of there two months ago and never came back.”
Another residence, on Oak Knob Road north of Lafayette, was completely destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
Lafayette emergency units responded to the call at about 3:20 AM, and Scruggs said the fire was already fully involved by that time.
Fourteen members of the Lafayette Fire Department worked to put out the flames, and Macon County Sheriff Department and EMS were also on the scene.
The two-story house, located at 3152 Oak Knob Road, was empty when the fire broke out, as lone occupant Butch Salee was not at home. The listed home owner is Carmella Salee, Butch’s mother.
The incident is being treated as a fire of unknown cause, said Scruggs.
