5th graders at Westside Elementary have been learning how to play chess, and how to teach others to play, since August. Friday night the students were able to show off what they’ve learned by teaming up against their parents. First the group went over how to play, and the rules, and then it was game on.

“This activity really helps children exceed in math and helps to give them self convidence,” explains teacher Januarie Alred. This is her second year using the activity as a teaching tool.
