Matthew Aaron Draper, formerly of Macon County, was killed in a shooting in Dickson, TN in the late evening of New Year’s Day. The shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn near I-40 at around 11:20 PM.

Police say the man who fired was Justin Treece, 23, who is now in custody in Dickson County. Draper’s cousin, 23-year-old Cody Jackson, sustained gunshot wounds to the arm and was eventually transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center. An unnamed woman who was with them at the time drove both of the men to the nearest hospital in their own vehicle, where Draper was pronounced dead.

Both of the men were from Hartsville, although Draper grew up in Macon and played baseball at Macon County High School.

“It was a drug deal gone bad,” said Det. Chad Fussell, “it was just kind of a meeting spot, nobody was from here or anything. They happened to be passing through and meet here.”

Dickson police said that the incident was drug related. A young woman, Jessie Mulder, was at the meeting with Treece. She was not charged with anything, but was a person of interest whom police have interviewed. Treece and Mulder had left the scene when police arrived, but a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) was issued for his vehicle, and the two were apprehended in McNairy County, where they both reside.

Treece faces charges of felony murder and attempted first degree murder in Dickson Municipal Court on January 10. His bond was set at $1,500,000.

Funeral services for Matthew Draper were conducted Saturday at 1 pm from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Brother Jerry Gammon officiating. Interment followed in the Drury Cemetery. A complete obituary is on 6B.
