Four Macon County residents were killed in a house fire on Cave Hollow Road Sunday night. Robert and Barbara Solomon and Barbara’s sister Alice Crockarell were all residents of the home that burned. The fourth victim, Danny Nash, was a neighbor who went into the house to save them.
Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs said that the home did have an alarm system, which went off at around 7 PM. “It worked,” said Scruggs, “and we got there in four minutes. When we got there it was just so far involved. It happened so fast. It wasn’t normal. I’ve been fighting fires for 39 years, and you just know; something went real wrong, real fast.”
Scruggs stated that the age and physical condition of the three in-home victims could have contributed to their being unable to get out of the house quickly enough.
He said that there was no indication of foul play, but that various factors may have caused an explosion early on. “The invalid smoked on the sun room in the back,” said Scruggs. “There was a lot of oxygen inside; there were five propane tanks on the back porch. Propane, heat, we’ve got to figure out what went wrong.”
Neighbor Danny Nash “dashed inside,” according to Scruggs, “And I’m not sure that [he] hadn’t gotten [the Solomons] to the door because they were close to the door. We got them out early on. But the partially invalid lady was in the bed and he was there at the foot; he’d made it to her but that was as far as he got.”
Responding to the scene were the Lafayette, Red Boiling Springs, Willette, and Westmoreland Fire Departments, as well as EMS, the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, and coroner Steve Jones (not complete list). There were also a group of fireman’s wives providing refreshments throughout the night, as units were on the scene from about 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM.
“Danny Nash, I’ve known him all my life,” said Chief Scruggs. “He was just trying to do what he knew to do as a neighbor. Bless his heart, you just shouldn’t run into a burning building, and he did that in love for his community. And it’s sad— but it’s admirable. He died a hero as far as I’m concerned.”

Funeral Services for Danny Charles Nash will be conducted Thursday at 11 am from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Jeff Likens and Elder Tom Carter officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Cemetery.
Visitation will begin Tuesday at 11 am – 10 pm, Wednesday 8 am – 10 pm, Thursday 8 am until service time at 11. There will be Masonic Services in the Chapel,Wednesday evening at 7 pm.

Kyra Danielle Chandler, all of Lafayette; Brother,
Douglas Dwight Nash and wife Dawn of Lafayette; Sister,
Melitha Russell of Hartsville, Melinda Roberts and husband Ed of Lebanon, Melodie McBroom and husband Ramey of Cookeville; 2nd daughter/Niece, Brandi Nash; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.

There will be no funeral services for Willa Alice McGahee Crockarell , arrangements by Alexander Funeral Home. Willa is survived by: Son, Craig Smith and wife Nancy; Granddaughters, Chelsea Smith and Breanna Smith all of Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Robert Edward Solomon, age 83, and Barbara Ann Solomon, age 72, will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Chris Solomon, Brother Wesley Pedigo, and Brother Christopher Solomon officiating. Interment will follow in the Macon County Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will begin Monday 5 am – 9 pm, and Tuesday 10 am -9 pm, Wednesday 10 until service at 2 pm.
Family request memorials in the form of donations be made toward the funeral expenses, this can be made at the funeral home office.
