Workmen from Tri-County Electric were busy around the courthouse in Lafayette on Thursday, putting up new street lights. The old were deemed unsafe, and while they are being replaced, a few needed improvements are being made. The new lights are black poled, better, brighter, and some cables are being buried.
The square will also see the return of a fence that is over 110 years old and was originally part of the square. It was taken down, but recently donated back to the county.
“It’ll be a part of revitalization,” said Randy East of the Genealogical and Historical Society. “It’s helping enhance and beautify the square. When they bury all the cables, then we’ll start on the fence. The inmates are going to come out and help; we’re trying to start Monday.
The county commission voted to put the money down to bury those cables; that and putting these fences back up is going to really improve the look of the courthouse. Every little thing we do is a step in the right direction. Lafayette is the seat of Macon County, so it’s not only for ourselves, but for industry, for others looking to come in here. We need to put our best foot forward. People are gonig to have to look therough the eyes of a visitor instead of looking through the eyes of a hometown person—becasue we get used to things.”
