A man was arrested in Macon County this week for a trailer theft that occurred back in February.
Casey Wayne Looper, 29, of 8559 Old Hwy 52 Westmoreland, was charged by Lafayette Police with one count of theft over $1,000 and by the Macon Sheriff Department with three counts of unlawful possession of stolen property and one count of theft over $1,000.
The first charges relate to the 18-ft trailer that was stolen from Lafayette resident Doyle Pruitt’s home. The theft was reported on February 14. Pruitt himself then discovered the stolen trailer on the internet in April, when he was shopping for a replacement.
He and a friend, along with several members of the Lafayette Police Department, went up to Cleveland, TN, where the trailer had been advertised for sale. Pruitt identified the trailer and recovered it, and police were able to obtain information from the seller on where he’d acquired the stolen item. This led to the April 25 arrest of Casey Looper.
Detective Keith Tillman of LPD said that Casey’s younger brother Tyler was charged with possession of stolen property. “[Tyler] had taken the trailer up to Cleveland to unload it for him,” he said.
Casey Looper’s other charges relate to another stolen trailer that was taken out of Smith County. The investigation is ongoing, but he was charged in the meantime with possession of stolen property.
