Central Elementary School in Lafayette held a continuation of county schools’ participation in Read Across America this week. The reading promotion was called “Pop Open a Good Book,” and Central students read about 2,500 books during the challenge.
From Monday to Friday, March18-22, students were each asked to read 6 books, then tell either a parent or teacher about it as proof. Teachers then kept a log in each classroom of the number of books read by each child. At the end of the week, with the goal number met and exceeded, the kids were filed into the gym, given a bag of popcorn apiece, and treated to a showing of The Lorax. Prizes were also given out to each student who met specific goals, and all students received a book to keep, and a goodie bag with items like a bookmark and a Dr. Suess pencil.
Parents were very involved with the project, receiving an explanatory letter and encouraged to read with their children and be involved with the reward.
