Three men were arrested for theft this week, after homeowners allegedly caught them trying to steal a $40,000 tractor and a $4,000 motorcycle from their home. Detective Donnie Crawford at the Macon County Sheriff Department booked them into custody, after a brief chase that ended with their apprehension by Sumner County authorities.

John Howard returned to his home at 1889 Hawkins Rd. on Sunday and caught the three subjects on the property, according to Det. Crawford: “They were trying to load the tractor on the back of the truck. When he confronted them, they unloaded the tractor, jumped in the truck and sped off.

“When they sped off they met Mrs. Hower coming up the driveway. They swerved to miss her, and the trailer caught her vehicle, causing damage to the front end.” Because of this damage, the man driving the truck, Otis Singleton, was charged with vandalism in addition to the other charges.

Mr. and Mrs. Hower got into their own vehicle and followed the men into Westmoreland, says Crawford, calling 911 on the way. “Sumner Co got them stopped, then they were brought back to the Macon county sheriff’s department, where I interviewed them,” said Crawford.

The Howers went home and checked the residence, finding other missing items such as a lawnmower, washer and dryer, and some tools. These items are an ongoing investigation, according to Crawford.

“We questioned all three subjects about why they were on the property,” he said. “They’re contracted out through a mortgage company to maintain foreclosed and for-sale homes, and they were supposed to be up there mowing the yard, and they admitted to trying to steal the tractor. The other items are still an ongoing investigation. The house is actually under pending sale.

“The motorcycle was located in the shop beside the house. It was under lock and key. They opened the sliding door to get the motorcycle out. The side of the shop, the doorframe is busted-they tried to gain entry through there.”

The three men—Otis Singleton and Sheron Davis of Nashville, and Anthony Singleton of Memphis—have each been charged with theft over $1,000 and theft over $10,000. They are being held without bail for a November 17 court date.

The company that they work for currently has over 100 contracts across Middle Tennessee, from Knoxville to Memphis. Crawford said they plan to look carefully into other jobs that these subjects have worked on.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor, acknowledgment of reality is a good starting point. I read in last week’s paper that upgrading Hwy 10 is not in the state budget for the next 3 years. Without doubt Mayor Linville, as well as the rest of us, needs to be concerned for the blatant disregard for the safety of our c...
