“I can’t wait to see them in person!” It was a beautiful, warm fall day in October 2012 for the crew of five volunteers to do their work. After almost four years of planning and designing, working with two different State of Tennessee departments for guidance and approval, finding the most cost-effective way to construct them to endure weather conditions for many years, new welcome signs are now erected at the four main entrances into Red Boiling Springs.
Installation work began first as the local volunteers prepared the ground and installed posts. Next came some brick work and finishing to the posts. Then the signs themselves were erected within the framework. A gabled roof was added to complete the “front porch” design. Work lasted for about four months from mid-August through mid-November. After winter had almost passed, the final touch – a red water hand pump – was installed in the gable area of each sign.
Funding for this project was provided by the City of Red Boiling Springs, Nestle Waters of North America and Macon County’s Three-Star Committee. All building materials, as much as possible, were purchased from local suppliers. The design, construction and installation of the four signs were provided by local volunteers. Each sign is estimated to be worth, including all the volunteer hours, about $4,000.
Sign #1 greets folks coming into town from Lafayette. Sign #2 welcomes folks coming into Red Boiling Springs on the Carthage Road. On the North Springs Road at the city limits is the location of sign three. At the top of Bennett Hill Road, sign #4 greets folks coming in from Kentucky.
