Beginning this fall, students at Macon County and Red Boiling Springs High Schools will have the opportunity to earn college credit from Cumberland University through a dual enrollment program.
Officials from Macon County, Macon County Public Schools and Cumberland University recently announced an agreement that will allow for courses to start this fall and take place at the UCHRA and Career Center on Highway 52 in Lafayette, Tenn.
“It started with a conversation between our president and a couple of people who were doing an economic study on Macon County,” said Cumberland Executive Vice President for Cumberland, “and trying to bring in some kind of postsecondary education to the area as a result of that study. It’s been nearly a year in the making.
“Our intention is not to replace anything that Vol State, TN Tech, TTC, or anyone else is doing. We just want to fill some gaps that that economic study pointed back and said that Macon could use. We just want to provide some additional things for Macon County residents.”
Under the agreement Cumberland University will provide two dual enrollment courses: College Algebra (MATH-111) and Introduction to Microcomputer Applications (CIS-170). And, because it fulfills Cumberland general education requirements, course credit will apply to students pursuing any major on the CU campus.
As an introductory rate Cumberland University is charging $425 for each course, plus a $25 application fee and the cost of the textbook for the class.
Pawlawski said the University is excited to partner with the community by providing dual enrollment courses.
“First, it is an honor to be invited into Macon County and provide a service to this great community.” said Pawlawski. “Dual enrollment is an excellent way for students to prepare themselves for post high school and advance their college careers. Also, we look forward to adding more courses in the spring semester and beyond as we reach out to the adult and non-traditional population in Macon County to offer a wide variety of courses that are market and employment-driven.”
Dual enrollment courses will be taught by Cumberland University faculty. Classes will begin during the week of August 27—31. The exact schedule for the first round of dual enrollment classes will be announced soon.
Students who are interested in enrolling in the dual enrollment program should contact their guidance counselor. Members of the community are also invited to enroll in the courses.
