Lafayette’s Relay for Life event is taking place this Friday night, June 6, in Key Park. This yearly fundraiser for The American Cancer Society involves months of friendly competition, fundraising, and community cooperation, culminating in an evening of fun that goes on all night long.

This year, opening ceremonies begin at 6 PM. Lindsay Kenyon will sing the national anthem and Terri Merryman will introduce the dozens of local teams who have given their time and effort this year.

Throughout the evening, these teams will all have their own activities going on: Citizen’s Bank will be selling hot fudge cakes; Measure-Up will is hosting a sweet shop and horseshoe game; Walmart is selling meatball subs, nachos, and pickles on a stick; Hillwood Helpers will be selling walking tacos and meatball sliders, Macon Bank will offer coffee and doughnuts, Tamra Coley and Friends will have a dunking machine; Cobb-Vantress is hosting a mini iPad giveaway; North Central will be selling hot dogs; MCGH will be selling popcorn and funnel cakes; Walgreens/O’Reilly Auto Parts will offer safari pictures; Dodson Farms will offer pony rides, trail mix, games, and drinks; Nestle will be selling hamburgers and chips; Holy Family Catholic Church will be distributing candy bars and chair massages. There will also be a silent auction table, sponsored by all teams and Relay committee.

At 6:15, there will be music from Makinley Smith. The Survivor Walk begins at 7:00 PM. There will be team activity, games, and entertainment by the Shoo B Doos and others throughout the evening. At 9:00 PM, the Luminaria Ceremony and Remembrance Walk will begin.

Finally, at 11 PM, a special celebration and awards ceremony will be held, during which the winning fundraiser team will be announced. Awards categories are: Most Money Raised, Best Decorated Campsite, Spirit Award, Most Luminarias Sold, and Midnight Special (most team members still present at midnight).

This is a family friendly event, and it’s for a good cause. The entire community is encouraged to come for some, if not all, of the evening.
