The Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs Police Departments each made drug arrests this week, one following a routine traffic stop and the other during a home visit from the Department of Children’s Services.

The first arrest, on Wednesday of last week, occurred on Chestnut Street.

Arresting officer Sgt. J.J. Ruiz with LPD said that he stopped the vehicle on patrol for having a brake light out. Driver Zachary Knight’s license showed up in the system as suspended, so a K-9 unit was brought in to do a run around the vehicle. The K-9 gave “a positive indication of narcotics odor coming from the vehicle.” said Ruiz. “A search of the vehicle reveled hyperdermic needles, methamphetamines along with digital scales, plastic baggies, tubing, rolling papers.”

There was another passenger in the vehicle, who was also the vehicle owner. Ruiz also said that coffee filters with powder-like substance were found in passenger Benjamin Bolte’s wallet.

Knight was arrested on charged with driving on suspended license. Bolte was arrested and charged with one of possession of SCH.II, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of manufacturing narcotics. Bolte’s court date is set for June 12, with bond set at $29,500.

On Thursday, RBSPD officer Jimmy Morgan was conducting a home visit in conjunction with DHS at 85 Shady Oak Dr. in Red Boiling Springs.

“I found a Marlboro pack laying on the TV,” Morgan reported. “The Marlboro Pack had in it a small bag containing a green leafy substance. Also in the bag was a white oval pill with Watson 385 on it, and a half of a rolled up cigarette containing a green leafy substance. Inside the Marlboro box there were also two more white oval pills with Watson 385 on them.”

There were two children present at the home at the time of the visit.

Shana Michelle Rich was arrested and charged with one count of simple possession, one count of legend drugs: sell, give, obtain and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Her court date is set for July 10 with bond set at $2,500.

Thomas Dewayne Rice was arrested and charged with one count of simple possession, one count of legend drugs: sell, give, obtain and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is scheduled for July 10 with bond set at $3,500.

Before the start of the 2013 Red Boiling Springs commencement, the graduating seniors took a moment to gather around a special memorial at Red Boiling Springs High School to say a prayer for a fellow classmate. This memorial at RBSHS is a tree that was planted in the memory of Brandon Tidwell. Brandon would have been a 2013 graduate of RBSHS but his life was tragically cut short, at age 15, in an accidental shooting on June 7, 2010.
