A new welcome sign has just been installed on Hwy 52, outside the Lafayette City limits. The sign reads “Welcome to: Lafayette Tennessee. Organized 1843.”
The Lafayette Rotary Club acquired a matching simplified grant with Rotary District 6780 for the project, spearheaded by Rotary member Ricky White. The sign is near the intersection of Hwy 52 and Key Road.
White said that the sign was placed in that location because it is one of the main entrances into the county. Also, he said, the area around it was in a region hit hard by the 2008 tornado, and this helped their chances in the grant application.
“The total cost on it was $4,200, and half of that was paid by the grant,” said Lafayette Rotary President Barry Doss.
The sign was placed about a half mile outside the city limits because, White said, “The city is probably going to grow out in that direction, so we just placed the sign out a little ways.” The Rotary Sign Committee presented the idea to the Lafayette City Council, although they were informed that they didn’t need the approval of the city, the city council expressed their appreciation.
