Girl Force/Boy Force, a day of physical activity, health education, and fun for Macon County’s 5th graders, was held on Wednesday, March 27. The event has been sponsored by Macon County Coordinated School Health for 12 years running.
Transportation Supervisor Larry Holldand arranged to have the kids brought in from across the county; girls were taken to Lafayette Elementary School, and boys were taken to the National Guard Armory.
Throughout the morning, kids were put on a rotation of physical exercises such as jump rope, obstacle courses, races, Zumba (for the girls), situps, and many more. They were also placed in rotations of classroom presentations, to learn on topics like body image and the dangers of smoking.
The event is held with the help of many volunteers in the community, including high school students from RBSHS and MCHS, local health care professionals, and teachers.
Presenters for the boys: Justin Wezet, MCJH teacher, taught on nutrition; Zack Hollis, MCHS student, taught on the dangers of smoking; and Chase Greenhalgh, MCHS graduate and former football player, taught on making good choices.
Presenters for the girls: Stacey Brawner and Janet Skelton of Macon County General Hospital taught on nutrition, Melissa Ross of the Macon County Health Department taught on sugary drinks, and Tara Wix, Director of Health Services for schools, taugth on body image.
The following Lafayette Elementary teachers helped with the event for the girls: Tonya Wells, Sherry Swoner, Teresa Rush, Torrie Marsh, and Kristen Hix. The following MCHS football coaches volunteered their time to oversee the boys’ physical activity: Head Coach Nathan Wilson, Asst. Coach Matt Dyer, and Asst. Coach Jason Hudson.
