A memorial celebration was held on Lafayette square Friday night in honor of Gabriel James “Gabe” Johns, the son of Tim and Tina Johns, who passed away suddenly early Monday morning. Gabe was 19 years old.

A large group of friends and family came together on the square in the lockdown event, which was organized by Ryan Thompson, a school friend of Johns’. Johns, who enjoyed driving trucks with friends, and had recently purchased tires for his own pickup, was honored in memory by a convoy of his school buddies, all in diesel trucks.

The lockdown was attended by a large community, who celebrated the young man’s life with music, food, and trucks circling the square. Over three thousand dollars was raised for funeral expenses.

“The Johns family wants to thank Ryan and all of Gabe’s friends for the event and also the two web pages they created on facebook,” wrote Gabe’s mother Tina. To submit or view photos of Gabe, go to Tim Johns, Tina Johns, or Gabe Johns’ Facebook web pages.

“We want to thank Macon County Sheriff’s Department, dispatchers, ambulance service and life flight for keeping Gabe alive on that most terrible Monday morning,” Tina continued. “I want to thank everyone in Macon County and anyone else for their words, prayers, and presence at Vanderbilt and Alexander Funeral Home and for everyone on that wonderful ride to Haysville Cemetery.

“Love you all! Thank you everyone in Macon and Sumner County and anyone else for all they have done in the lockdown event and funeral. Leaving the funeral home Friday night and seeing everyone with their trucks and standing around having a good time was the most touching of our hearts. Thanks.”

There will also be a Memorial 5K Run/Walk and 1/2 Mile Kids Fun Run on Saturday, May 25 at Macon County Junior High. The 5K starts at 8:30 AM, and the Fun Run starts at 10:30.

Funeral Services for Gabe Johns were conducted on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Otis Jones officiating. For full obituary, see 7A.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor, acknowledgment of reality is a good starting point. I read in last week’s paper that upgrading Hwy 10 is not in the state budget for the next 3 years. Without doubt Mayor Linville, as well as the rest of us, needs to be concerned for the blatant disregard for the safety of our c...

Ms. Dillehay, Your editorial last week was insightful and needed. I agree that the “Reach your dreams” speech can produce wannabes who are reluctant to do a day’s work, I believe that what we really need is a sense of balance. I believe that we need to encourage our students to reach their goa...
