Walmart shoplifting call leads to meth arrests
by Tilly Cryar, Editor

Two young men were arrested and charged with promotion of methamphetamine manufacture at the Lafayette Walmart last Monday, after police responded to a simple shoplifting call.

Sgt. Shane Reed and Officer Danny Meador of the Lafayette Police arrived on the scene and were told by security officers that Richard Bain, 30, and Stanley Wise, 23, had torn open some pill boxes in the Pharmacy isle.

They followed the men into the parking lot. “I spoke with Stanley Wise,” said Reed in the report, “and as soon as I approached him I could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person.”

Wise had purchased a bottle of Drano—commonly used in meth manufacture—and allegedly told the security officer that he was taking it to his uncle in Kentucky to make meth. A pack of lighters fell out of Wise’s shorts while the officers were standing there.

Bain, also, appeared to be extremely intoxicated. The report states that he “had very slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet.” He also allegedly refused to let officers see what was inside the bottle.

“I… asked the defendant to pull his pockets inside out,” states Meador’s report. “The defendant then took off running from me.” He later told officers that the stainless steel container on his person contained Xanax and a medication to treat fibromyalgia. He said that his mother had provided the pills for his nerves.

Wise was charged with one count of promotion of methamphetamine and one count of public intoxication. His court date is October 17, and bond is set at $50,500. Bain was charged with one count of promotion of methamphetamine manufacture, one count of resisting arrest, one count of public intoxication, one count of possession of legend Drug, and one count of possession of Schedule IV drug. His court date is October 10, with $55,000 bail.
