Two boys, age 16 and 18, were flown to Vanderbilt two weeks ago after allegedly snorting pills from an unmarked bottle that had been found in a field nearby.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on Thursday. Billy Joe Williams, also a resident of Cherry’s trailer park, was charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one count of possession of a legend drug, and one count of reckless endangerment.

“Back on June 21, we got called to go to Cherry’s Trailer park about an overdose,” said Lafayette Police Captain Kevin Woodard. “When I got there, there was a 16 year old boy and an 18 year old boy that was sitting outside. They were unresponsive.

“EMS had already gotten there and started working on them. We got them loaded up and one of the people who were hanging out let me know that Williams was with them and he knew what had happened. When I asked him he said he didn’t know, that they didn’t take anything, that he’d been with them all day. He said that he’d stepped out to see a friend, which turned out to be a lie.

“They life-flighted the two boys to Vanderbilt. While we were waiting for the life flight to take off, this Williams boy comes up to me and tells me that he’s sorry that he lied, he didn’t want these boys to die. He said that he’d found a bottle of pills in a field, and that they’d been snorting them today. They weren’t aware of what kind of pills they were; they just started sniffing them. That’s when these two boys went unresponsive.

“I asked him if he still had the pills, and he said yes, so we went and recovered the pills so we could identify them to let he ambulance service know.”

The pills were unmarked bottles of Baclofen (20 MG) and Promethazine (25 MG), neither of which is a controlled substance.

“When we come back and I went inside to get these pills identified, Williams left the scene. So I ended up charging him for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, because he knowingly provided and allowed a 16-year-old juvenile to take the pills, then also for possession of a legend drug, and reckless endangerment. “

“Come to find out [Williams] had snorted some too. He was fine at the time, but then after he went back home, he went to the hospital for an overdose. He was released that same day, but these two boys were worse than he was.”

The two young men were kept in the ICU for a few days and are currently recovering. Williams’ court date is set for August 15, and bail was set at $10,000.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor, acknowledgment of reality is a good starting point. I read in last week’s paper that upgrading Hwy 10 is not in the state budget for the next 3 years. Without doubt Mayor Linville, as well as the rest of us, needs to be concerned for the blatant disregard for the safety of our c...
