Macon County’s own Beverly Shoulders has been chosen as the 2012 Tennessean Boys Golf Coach of the Year.
The Tennessean chooses a player of the year as well as 1st and 2nd team picks each season in the All-Midstate Boys Golf category.
The Tennessean said that Shoulders was chosen because of her team’s accomplishments: “going undefeated against Class A/AA competition all season, Macon County avenged a 2011 region tournament loss to Lipscomb to qualify for this year’s state tournament, then won that event by five strokes over Alcoa for the school’s first championship in any sport.”
“Last year when Lipscomb beat us, our goal was to come back and beat them,” said Shoulders. “We thought if we could beat them in the region, we’d have a good chance to win the state because they are consistently a very good team. This group of boys worked hard all offseason. Most of them don’t play anything but golf now. They’ve given up other sports to concentrate on golf.”
Also named was Larken Whittemore, a Macon County High School Sophomore, who was a 2nd Team pick.
