Macon boys win district title

The Macon County High School Tiger and Tigerette basketball teams recently competed in the District 8AA Tournament held at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. Going into the tournament, the Tigers were the No. 1 seed, while the Tigerettes were the No. 2 seed behind Upperman. With both teams being top two seeds, they automatically advanced to the District Semi-Final game and were also guaranteed to move on to the Region 4AA Tournament.

On Friday, February 17, the Tigerettes played Smith County in the semifinal game. The Tigerettes put up a tough fight, but fell short of the victory with a final score of 55-59. Individual scores were Keeley Carter 22, Kyndal Bullington 13, Jenna Russell 7, Jamie Ashburn 6, Mattie Goolsby 5, and Luci Allen 2. With the loss, the Tigerettes were forced to play in the consolation game and would have to travel for their region game.

Also on Friday, The Tigers played Central Magnet in the boys semifinal game. The Tigers defeated the Tigers of Central Magnet by a close score of 62-60. Individual scores were Seth Carlisle 27, Michael Ashburn 10, Heston King 10, Cameron Welch 6, Riley Phillips 4, Cole Carnahan 3, and Dalton Marsh 2. With the win, the Tigers advanced to the district championship and would get to host their region game.

On Saturday, February 18, the Tigerettes played Upperman in the District Consolation game, after Upperman lost to Livingston Academy in triple overtime. The Tigerettes were defeated by the Lady Bees by a score of 39-52. Individual scores were Keeley Carter 15, McKaylee Mix 6, Kyndal Bullington 5, Jamie Ashburn 3, Morgan Carter 3, Jenna Russell 2, Mattie Goolsby 2, and Luci Allen 2.

Also on Saturday, the Tigers played against Upperman in the district championship game. The Tigers defeated the Bees 53-42 to claim the District Champion title and be the #1 seed for District 8AA going into the Region Tournament. Individual scores were Heston King 11, Seth Carlisle 10, Michael Ashburn 9, Dalton Marsh 7, Kendrick Carter 6, Riley Phillips 5, and Cameron Welch 5.

During the District Tournament Meeting, both the Tigers and Tigerettes had several players that received awards. For the Tigerettes, All-District Team 1: Keeley Carter; All-District Team 3: Jenna Russell; All-Defensive Team: Jenna Russell; All-Freshman Team: Keeley Carter (MVP) and Jamie Ashburn. Head Coach Larry White was also named Girls Co-Coach of the Year alongside Upperman’s Dana McWilliams. During the tournament, Keeley Carter and Kyndal Bullington were named to the District 8AA All-District Team. For the Tigers, All-District Team 1: Michael Ashburn and Seth Carlisle; All-District Team 3: Riley Phillips and Heston King; All-Defensive Team: Michael Ashburn; Freshman Player of the Year: Dalton Marsh; Honorable Mention: Cameron Welch. Head Coach Jason Welch was also named Boys Coach of the Year. During the Tournament, Seth Carlisle (MVP), Michael Ashburn, Heston King, and Dalton Marsh were all named to the District 8AA All-District Team.

The Tigerettes now have an overall record of 20-9, and will enter the Region Tournament as the #4 seed for District 8AA. The Tigerettes will travel to District 7AA #1 Signal Mountain High School on Friday, February 24, for the first round the Region 4AA Tournament. Tip off is set for 7:00pm Eastern Time/6:00pm Central Time.

The Tigers now have an overall record of 25-4, and will enter the Region Tournament as the #1 seed for District 8AA. The Tigers will host District 7AA #4 Bledsoe County High School on Saturday, February 25, for the first round of the Region 4AA Tournament. Tip off is set for 7:00pm Central Time.
