The Macon County High Boy’s Golf Team won Region 4 to advance to the TSSAA Division I A-AA State Championships to be played at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester, TN on October 4-5. The boy’s won the District 8 Golf Tournament on Tuesday, September 20, with a solid score of 308; which was 53 strokes better than Goodpasture, the second place team. Scoring for the boys in District play were: Josh Hauskin 74, Bryson Smith 75, Landon Polston 78, and Chance Presley 81. In Region play on Thursday, September 22, Macon County boys did not shoot as low; however, they played well enough to win the Region by a score of 324 over Signal Mountain’s 332 strokes. Scoring for Macon County in the Region: Josh Hauskin 77, Bryson Smith 79 Chance Presley 82, and Landon Polston 86. This will be the third appearance in the State Championships for the Macon County Boy’s Golf team. Their last trip was in 2014 where they finished in 4th place. Four members of the current team played in that State Tournament: Bryson Smith, Chance Presley, Josh Hauskin and Jake Reeves.
“Our goal at the beginning of this season was to make it to and WIN the State Championship this year. We lost in a sudden death playoff last year in Region play to Chattanooga Notre Dame and were determined to not let that happen again. We have reached the stage we were looking to play on; Now, it’s time to go take care of business! This is a special group of young men and they’ve worked very hard to get this opportunity. Most high school student athletes never get the opportunity to play at this level, to compete with the eight best A-AA teams in the state,” said Head Coach and Athletic Director Beverly Shoulders. “I want these young men to have that feeling of pride you get when you’ve accomplished the biggest prize of all—State Champions. In 2012, Macon County won the State Championship in Division I A-AA and still hold the honor of being the first team in Macon County High School history to win a State Championship. This is our time again. We have the ability and support to bring home that gold trophy again,” added Shoulders.
The Macon County Times would like to congratulate the members of this team as well as their coaches on this achievement. Best of luck at state!
On Monday, September 19, the Macon County Girls’ Golf Team finished the District Tournament in second place scoring a 190 round and finishing behind Murfreesboro Central Magnet. Scoring for Macon County were Bailey Powell 88, Carson Roddy 102, and McKaylee Mix 102. In Region play on Thursday, September 22, the Macon County girl’s team finished in third place, ending their chances to advance as a team. However, sophomore Carson Roddy advanced as an individual to the TSSAA State Championships by shooting a score of 87 and then winning a sudden death playoff on the first hole.
“Our girl’s have a very difficult Region to get out of, because the teams from the Chattanooga area have won the State Tournament for the past several years. I believe getting that close to going and having the desire they showed, will be enough along with hard work, to propel them to win the Region and get that chance to play on the big stage. There’s nothing comparable in high school sports to playing in the State Championships. This is the ultimate stage for our student athletes in high school. Carson Roddy will gain valuable experience even as an individual that will help the mental part of her game next year. I expect her to continue to play well and finish strong in the state. We have all three girls back next year and our expectations will be very high,” said head coach and Athletic Director Beverly Shoulders.
The Macon County Times would like to congratulate the members of this team and their coaches on all of their achievements this season. Best of luck at state, Carson!
