Macon County falls to Pearl Cohn

By Logan Horn

The Macon County High School Tiger football team travelled to Pearl Cohn High School on Friday, November 11 to take on the Firebirds in Round Two of the TSSAA State Playoffs. This was the first time the Tigers had played in a second round game since 2003. Before the game began, the Tigers won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half, giving the Firebirds the first possession of the game.

In the first half, both teams’ defenses looked great, keeping each other away from the endzones and causing punt after punt. Late in the first quarter, the Firebirds struck first with a touchdown. Their extra point attempt was good, making the score 0-7. Early in the second quarter, the Firebirds struck again with another touchdown and extra point, making the score 0-14. Midway through the second quarter, the Firebirds scored another touchdown followed by an extra point, bringing the score to 0-21. However, late in the second quarter, the Tigers blocked a punt return and took the ball over at the eight yard line. The Tigers capitalized on their blocked punt when Braxton Crawford scored a touchdown for the Tigers. The extra point attempt by Joey Medrano was good, making the score 7-21 going into halftime.

In the second half, midway through the third quarter, the Firebirds scored their fourth touchdown of the night followed by an extra point, making the score 7-28. The Firebirds then scored their fifth touchdown at the end of the third quarter. However, that extra point attempt was no good, making the score 7-34. Seconds into the fourth quarter, the Firebirds scored another touchdown. That extra point attempt was also no good, making the score 7-40. However, the Tigers answered right back when Michael Tirjan scored the second touchdown of the night for the Tigers. The extra point attempt by Medrano was good, making the score 14-40. On the next Firebird possession, the Tigers recovered a fumble, giving the Tigers the ball close to the endzone. However, the Firebird defense kept the Tiger offense from scoring another touchdown. With two minutes left in the game, the Firebirds scored their final touchdown of the night followed by an extra point, making the score 14-47, which was the final score.

With the loss, the Tigers finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 9-3, and a Region record of 4-3. However, the Tigers made plenty of history and gained a lot of media attention from The Tennessean this season. In fact, Seth Carlisle and Braxton Crawford were named to The Tennessean’s Top Offensive Performers for the second round of playoffs, despite the loss, for their performance during the game. Congratulations, Tigers, on a great season!

Class 4A teams still in the hunt for the Class 4A State Championship title: Knoxville Central, Knoxville Fulton. Spring Hill, Marshall County, Pearl Cohn, Springfield, Memphis East, and Ridgeway.
