At 8 a.m. on Sunday, February 5, 2017, on State Hwy 53 in Jackson County, two vehicles were involved in an automobile accident in which two people died.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sergeant Ashley Mercer investigated the accident, and said that a 2012 Chevy Van, driven by Ashley Newberry, 34, of Lafayette, was traveling west bound on Hwy. 53 and crossed over into the east bound lane and struck a 2012 Freightliner, driven by James L. Meadow, 51, of Gainesboro, in what was described as a head-on collision. Both drivers were killed.

Sgt. Mercer stated in the accident report, “It is unknown if Newberry was wearing his seatbelt due to the vehicle being burned.”

See Newberry’s obituary on page 2A.
