The 23rd Annual Family Fitness Festival, Makin’ Macon Fit will be held this Sat., Sept. 10th, at Macon County Junior High School, located at 1003 Highway 52 Bypass East, Lafayette. This event, supported completely by local volunteers, is designed to promote a healthier lifestyle and encourage physical activity. Makin’ Macon Fit also supports Macon County schools, teachers, and the community.

At this year’s event, we will be having the 10-mile bike tour sponsored by Knollwood Manor and The White House Assisted Living. Everyone participating in any bike event must wear a helmet and obey all rules of the road. You must be 12 years of age or older, or have an adult guardian to ride the 10-mile tour. This year we will be bringing back the 45-mile tour sponsored by NCTC. You must be 16 years of age or older, or have an adult guardian to ride the 45-mile tour.

We are very proud to have Nestle Waters as our 5k Race sponsor again this year. This is a perfect first race for the new runner. Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners. We will also award the top two finishers in each age category for male and female runners. The one-mile walk is sponsored by Macon Bank & Trust and the three-mile walk is sponsored by Citizens Bank.

Young children will enjoy the kids’ events sponsored by Macon County Coordinated School Health, Lafayette Children’s Clinic and Macon County Schools. The kids’ events will have the bike rodeo, obstacle course, bouncy equipment, and fun run. There are door prizes to be given away, including bicycles, helmets and other items donated by several organizations. The prize drawings take place at approximately 11 a.m.

Each year Makin’ Macon Fit takes pride in arranging a series of events for physically and mentally challenged individuals, sponsored by the Macon County Times. The events are a great way for all people, no matter what their abilities, to participate. They have a great time and get some healthful exercise. These events begin at 9:30 a.m.

The Macon County school with the most participants is awarded $500, $300 will be awarded to the school with the second-highest number of participants, and $200 will go to the teacher with the most participants. Other proceeds help fund the scholarship and support community projects.

All pre-registered participants will receive a Makin’ Macon Fit T-Shirt. There will be Health Fair booths along with fruits and drinks available to those participating.
