HaydenFest to be held this weekend

Staff Report

Twenty-three-year-old Hayden Shrum’s life was cut short in May of 2010, just one year after the star athlete was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, but his impact has had far-reaching effects.

Hayden started Mayfest in May 2010 to help others with cancer and it continues to this day. Hayden organized the outdoor music festival to give back. He had stated, after several months of recovery, “Everyone has been so wonderful to me and I want to help other cancer patients and their families by holding a fundraiser and give back.”

In 2014 the Mayfest Board of Directors decided to change the name of the outdoor music festival to Haydenfest to honor Hayden.

The fundraiser will be held at the Macon County Fairgrounds Saturday, October 22 and will feature live music: Jason Gammon, Mama Tried, Super Sport, Naked White Boys and the Flat Rock Ramblers. There will also be a beauty pageant this year beginning at 12 Noon.

Performances begin at 3 p.m. with not only music, but also food, kids’ events and an auction. Admission is only $5, but donations are gladly accepted.

One hundred percent of all proceeds go to families affected by cancer who live, work, or go to church in Macon County and/or the surrounding communities and are actively pursuing treatment.
