Former Macon County resident and current Westmoreland resident, Derek Wayne Rice became the fifth fatality on Sumner County roads last Friday morning.
The car driven by Rice, 22, was northbound on Highway 31E when his car crossed into the other lane and crashed head-on with a 1999 Ford F-250 pick-up driven by Phillip Kuhn, of Westmoreland.
According to reports, the accident occurred at 6:05 a.m. on Friday, June 14, and forced traffic to be redirected down Old Highway 31E for the next several hours.
Rice, who according to reports, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was taken by ambulance to Sumner Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Kuhn, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was transported by ambulance to Sumner Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
At press time, neither drugs nor alcohol have been indicated to have been a factor in the crash.
Funeral services were held for Derek Wayne Rice on Monday, June 17, at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home, with burial in the Stacy Cemetery in the old Antioch Community in Jackson County.
