The Macon County High School Football Team wrapped up spring practice last Friday night with a scrimmage against Springfield where Head Coach Daniel Cook said the team was shaping up for the 2006 season.

The defensive team, led by Coach Mark Shrum as the defensive coordinator and Coach Bob Fitzpatrick as 2nd coach, had a good spring practice and showed real improvement at the game.

Coach Pat Dyer returns this year as the offensive coach. After seven to eight days of practice with the returning coach, the team showed improvement on many levels.

Coach Cook, the youngest head coach in the state of Tennessee, was excited about the return of Coach Dyer and said, ‘he will make a good addition to our great coaching staff.' The Tigers are rumored to have one of the best coaching staffs in the state and has several years of combined coaching experience.

With a record of 5-6 last year, the 20 returning seniors still have a hard road ahead of them. Coach Cook said that Spenser Young, Kyle Woodard, and Nick Hall, all seniors, have pulled together and are showing leadership for the team

Several players are still competing in spring sports, including the 2006 quarterback, Keith Kirby, and it is hard for the coaches to grasp where the team has improved and areas that still need extra work.

“When all of the team members are present, we will have more of an understanding of how the team looks for the season,” said Coach Cook.

The first game of the season is scheduled for Friday night, August 18, where the Tigers will face off at home against Trousdale County.
