Unofficial results show that Rick Santorum led the polls in Macon County, coming away with 1,034 of the total 2,074 votes cast in the Republican Presidential Preference Primary election held yesterday.

Following Santorum are Newt Gingrich with 464 votes, Mitt Romney with 388 votes, and Ron Paul with 144.

Incumbent United States President Barack Obama received 95 of the total 113 votes cast in the Democratic Presidential Preference Primary.

Only 18.9 percent of registered voters in Macon County casted votes in this election.

Santorum led the primary in the State of Tennessee. He also won the North Dakota Caucus and the Oklahoma Primary elections.

Mitt Romney came out the victor in the Virgina, Vermont, Ohio and Massachussets primaries as well as the Alaska and Idaho caucuses; whereas Newt Gingrich took the primary in the state of Georgia.

Voters in Macon County also voted in the county primary for Assessor of Property, Road Supervisor and Constable for Districts 9 and 10.

Rick Shoulders, who currently serves as Assessor of Property, was the only Republican candidate to file in that race. No Democratic candidate filed.

Incumbent Road Supervisor Audie Cook was the only Republican candidate to file in that race. He will run against Charles “Chop” Porter, the only Democratic candidate to file for Road Supervisor, in the county general election.

No candidates filed for Constable in Districts 9 and 10; however there were seven write-in votes cast in the Republican primary and two write-in votes cast in the Democratic primary.
