*The Macon County Court voted overwhelmingly in favor of renovating the old jail, at an estimated cost of $75,000. This was in favor of a proposed plan to build an entirely new jail, at a cost of $103,000.

*Rita Breeding was crowned Miss Macon County High; runners up were Kim Cutrell and Shelia Cothron.

*City gas users were about to undergo a price increase between 300% and 500%, voted that week by the City Council. The increases were unavoidable, as the city was being penalized heavily by Texas Eastern Gas Company and could not find another source to buy from.

*The first annual March of Dimes Walkathon was held in Lafayette that week. It brought a total pledge amount of $2,006.41, and had 131 participants. The March of Dimes is still an active organization today.

*A weekly column called “The Family Lawyer” reported a recent litigation phenomenon: children of an unfaithful husband had successfully sued the ‘other woman’ for damages. They argued that she had deprived them of not only his love and affection but also the comfort and security of family life.

*Three new tennis courts opened, ready for play, at Lafayette city park. The city had spent $100,000 in park renovations over the two years prior.

*At a commissioners meeting, discussions were being held over the use of a piece of property on MCHS grounds. A Senior Citizens Center had been proposed, but one Lafayette Quarterback Club also desired to use the property for a new football stadium.

*Just over a year after its installation, the traffic light at the intersection of Highway 52 and Brattontown Circle suffered its first major malfunction. “Hopefully, the light will be reparired Tuesday afternoon,” stated Mayor Jimmy Driver.

*RBS high school valedictorian was Matt Sullivan; Salutatorian was Emily Ferguson.

*The Walmart branch of Macon Bank and Trust announced its opening.

*Ron Roberson was pictured in a kilt, headed to the Rotary Club Celtic Concert.

*The Lafayette Police department was recognized for excellence in making reports in a statewide crime reporting program known as TIBRS. Deneshia Hesson was presented with an Award of Excellence for “consistent, timely and error-free submissions” in her reports.

*On Days of Our Lives, Eric got into a sticky situation with Greta after Nicole planted “incriminating” evidence in his apartment. Later, Nicole promised Rex if he keeps doubling her investment, she’ll keep on having sex with him. Bo learned Hope was not going into premature labor, as she feared. Chloe told a stunned Belle that Nancy is her mother.
