The Macon County Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors is pleased to announce that five new members will be inducted into the Macon County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 2nd. The induction banquet will be held at Red Boiling Springs School cafeteria beginning at 6:00 p.m. The new members to be inducted at the 2012 Induction Banquet are as follows:
DONALD “Butch” CREEK- a 1974 graduate of MCHS he was a 4 year member of the golf team earning 3 time All Regional honors, 3 time All State honors, State Jr. Champion, had a 56-2 match record at MCHS and was the number one junior player in Tennessee at age 17. He was named 2 times All Ohio Valley Conference Golfer at Western Kentucky as their #1 player. He served as a graduate assistant at WKU in 1979 and coached Kenny Perry who now is on the pro golf tour. Butch turned pro in 1981. The only PGA professional to come from Macon County, he has won 84 golf tournaments during his career.
DEWAYNE DEERING- a 1979 graduate of MCHS and was a member of the basketball and baseball teams earning All Tournament honors in both sports, leading hitter in baseball and best defensive player in basketball. He played baseball at Vol State for two years after high school. He joined the Cumberland University coaching staff in 1986. He has assisted in basketball and has been the head tennis and volleyball coach during his tenure. During his coaching career he has been named Coach of the Year an amazing 14 times in volleyball and tennis, had 12 conference championships and 2 National Tournament appearances. He was inducted into the Cumberland University Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
GLEN GATTIS- began his coaching career in Macon County in 1984 as an assistant football coach and became assistant track and cross country coach in 1993. He was named as head track and cross country coach in 1996 where he still serves. During his tenure as head track and cross country coach his track teams or team members have qualified for state meets 13 times and cross country qualified 9 times. His track and cross country teams and or individuals have had 15 top 3 finishers in state meets and 9 have won state championships. His girls cross country teams have won 8 Region titles and the boys cross country have won 10 Region titles. Coach Gattis has had 11 of his track and/or cross country athletes earn college scholarships, some of them currently competing at the collegiate level.
JEFF GREGORY- a 1987 graduate of MCHS, transferred to MCHS from RBSHS after his sophomore year. At RBS Junior High he earned 4 all tournament selections and 2 MVP awards and as a sophomore at RBSHS he earned the leading free throw and leading scorer award. At MCHS Jeff was named all tournament 6 times, All District 10AA 2 times, All Region 5AA 2 times, District Tournament MVP and was named to the State Tournament All Tournament team in 1986, an honor that no other MCHS basketball player has ever earned. His senior season in 1987 he was named 1st team All Class AA, 2nd team All Midstate, became a 1,000 point scorer, and was voted Mr. Hustle and team MVP. Jeff had offers to play at the collegiate level but chose not to accept.
TONY WOOSLEY(Posthumously)- a 1984 graduate of MCHS he was a 4 year letterman in football and golf. In football he was a 3 year starter and his senior season he was Co-Captain and led the Tigers to a 7-3 record as the quarterback and to a post-season game in the 25th Industrial Bowl. He was honored after his senior season with All Midstate Honorable Mention, All District 10AA, Defensive Back of the Year and the Jimmy Glover Award. As a member of the MCHS golf team he was All District all 4 years, Most Improved his freshman year, Regional Medalist his freshman year, 1st freshman to ever make the State High School Golf Tournament, District Medalist his Junior year, and lowest average score his senior year. Tony became ill in April of his senior year and passed away October 30, 1984 at the age of 18. The MCHS Fieldhouse was named in his honor and a scholarship was established in 1985 in his honor.
