Many Macon residents may have driven past the landmark jewelry store off of Lafayette square and wondered what happened to it. Johnson’s Jewelers had its front window smashed in an accident on Saturday, when a Senior-aged driver intended to hit her brake pedal and landed on the gas instead.
Ms. Velda Jones, a Lafayette resident, was in the process of pulling her 2005 tan Buick Le Sabre into a parking spot in front of Johnson’s when the accident occurred.
“She went across the sidewalk and knocked a concrete flower urn out of the way,” said LPD Corporal Henry Behr, “knocked one of the support poles for their awning, and then hit the lower portion of the storefront, and broke that wall and broke the front glass. I believe there was some minor damage inside the store.”
Jones was not injured, and neither was anyone in the store. There was about $400 worth of damage to the vehicle, though, and owners estimate a few thousand dollars of damage to the storefront.
