A house on Coleytown Road burned to the ground early Tuesday morning. The resident of the house, who authorities feared had been in the house when it burned, was located Tuesday afternoon.

The Lafayette Fire Department responded to a call at about 4 AM Tuesday. Jeff Burrow, the owner of the residence, had been alerted to the fire and dialed 911.

“It had done fallen in by the time we go there,” said Assistant Fire Chief Troy Brawner. “It was fully involved. We couldn’t see anything, couldn’t make no contact.” They left the house at about 5:30 AM, after the flame had been controlled.

Tuesday afternoon, fire and rescue returned the still-smoking home to investigate the location of the man who’d been renting there. Cory Key, a wheelchair user, had been in the process of moving out, according to Brawner: “The owner said that he hadn’t seen anybody at the house since seven o’clock last night.”

A friend of Key’s became concerned that he hadn’t been able to contact him, so he made an emergency call. “They’re out there digging in the rubble trying to find the frame of a wheelchair,” said Burrow, “to try to get some kind of idea. We exhausted everything we know; the owner even had two phone numbers [on the renter].”

Tuesday at around 3:30, the man was located and emergency units left the scene for a second time.
