Charles Mason said, "After the first frost, take a persimmon and cut it in half and the shape inside will either be of a spoon (good weather) or a fork (bad weather)." Nina Carter added, "If a hornet has built its nest high it will be a bad winter, if it built its nest low it would be mild. Also, if corn husk were heavy(bad winter) or light (mild weather.)"

They stated that if the Wooley worm was black it was to be a bad winter or if the worm was light it was to be a light winter. Also, the number of fogs that were in the month of August would be the number of snows there would be in the winter. Donald Bergborf added, "That if the good Lord wants to have a good or bad winter we will have which ever he he wants."
