A duplex just on the edge of Lafayette city proper burned on Friday morning.

Flames were already visible from the windows of one side of the building when the Lafayette Fire Department responded to the call at just after 11 AM.

Cause of the fire is as yet unknown. It began on the right side of the duplex; occupant Gladys Patterson was not at home. This is the unit that sustained the most damage. One of the occupants of other unit, David Barry, was asleep inside the building when he was awakened by the sound of sirens. Firemen aroused him and evacuated him from the building.

“This is just crazy,” said Hardman’s mother, Vonda Hardman. “I just left here a few hours ago to pick up my dog and to go to my mother’s house.” The duplex is owned by Tina Gregory.

The first three firefighters to respond were Mikey Evetts, Tracy Hawkins, and Bubba Day.

As the smoke rolled from the house, the children at the Laugh-N-Learn Daycare, located beside the burning building, were evacuated and taken to a field behind the daycare. The children were then escorted over to City Hall in Police cars and parents were notified to come and pick up their children.
