The Red Boiling Springs Jr. High Bulldogs Basketball teams opened the Cumberland Rim Conference Tournament play this past Wednesday, January 9, in Westmoreland. A three day single elimination tournament, the RBS Jr. High girls opened the tournament playing the Lady Bulldogs of Clay County. Unfortunately, this was the only game the girls would play in the tournament. The RBS Jr. High Bulldogs faced the Blue Devils of Jackson County following the girls; they would advance in the bracket. Summaries from each game can be found below.

Scoring Summary in Jr. High Girls Action vs. Clay County Lady Bulldogs on January 9:

First quarter- RBS Jr. High Lady Bulldogs 8 Clay County Lady Bulldogs 10

The RBS Jr. High Lady Bulldogs opened the Cumberland Rim Conference Tournament playing the Lady Bulldogs of Clay County. The Lady Bulldogs wanted to make sure the opening game was an exciting one and that they did. The first quarter ended with the RBS Lady Bulldogs trailing their namesake only by 2 points. When the second quarter of play opened, the RBS Lady Bulldogs took control and didn’t let up. They scored 14 points to their opponents 2. The Lady Bulldogs were able to go to the locker room with a comfortable lead of 10. However, when they came back to play the third quarter, the drive they had seemed to have fizzled. Their opponents took over the third quarter outscoring the Lady Bulldogs by 10 points putting them back into the game. When the third quarter buzzard sounded, the game was tied at 24. Going to fourth quarter, both teams realized they had their work cut out for them if they wanted to advance in the tournament bracket. For the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, the game was back and forth and tied for most of the four minutes. With only 34 seconds left in the game, the RBS Lady Bulldogs scored two points to break the tie, making the score 33 to 31. Then with 24 seconds left the Clay Co. Lady Bulldogs netted a three making the score RBS 33 and Clay Co. 34. With the ball in the hands of the RBS Lady Dogs, they raced down the court only to lose possession of the ball with 19 seconds to go. Clay Co. gains control of the ball and is fouled by RBS Lady Bulldogs. Clay Co. hits one shot. Clay Co. is able to hit a few more foul shots after being fouled by the Lady Bulldogs. With 1.9 seconds left in the game, the RBS Lady Bulldogs was trailing by a mere 4 points. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough time to get a three point shot off. The Jr. High Lady Bulldogs tried hard to make a comeback before the game ended, however fell short by a final score of 33-37. The Jr. High Lady Bulldogs attempted a total of 35 two point shots during the game. They made 11 of them for a shooting percentage of 31.4%. From the three point line, they shot 7 times, making 3, for 42.9%. Their opponents sent them to the free throw line 10 times. The Jr. High Lady Bulldogs hit 2 of the 10 foul shots for 20% from the line. Contributing to the Jr. High Lady Bulldogs stats were:

The Jr. High Bulldogs opened their tournament drive following the girls on Wednesday January 9. They had no problems with soaring past their opposition, the Jackson County Blue Devils. The Jr. High Bulldogs took an early lead and did not let up until the final buzzer. Jr. High Bulldogs ended the first quarter on top of the Blue Devils by 15 points. During the second quarter, the Blue Devils defense tightened up and held the Bulldogs to only score six points. Going in the locker room at halftime, the Jr. High Bulldogs had a relaxed lead of 15 points. Third quarter was slow for both teams with the Bulldogs only scoring 8 while their opponents scored 5. With the final quarter of play, the Jr. High Bulldogs took control of the game scoring 15, which was doubled what their opponents scored. When the final buzzer sounded ending the game, the Jr. High Bulldogs were on top by 26 points. From the two point line, Jr. High Bulldogs, as a team, attempted 32 two point shots. They made 12 for a shooting percentage of 37.5%. From the three point range, the Jr. High Bulldogs put up 7 shots, making 5, for 71.4%. They were put on the free throw line 14 times. They converted 7 of those 14 times into points for 50%. Adding to the Bulldogs victory was:

This win advanced the Jr. High Bulldogs on to the next round of the tournament.

Final Score- RBS Jr. High Bulldogs 20 Macon County Jr. High Tigers 45

With the first game behind them and the risk of elimination gone, the Jr. High Bulldogs played the second round of tournament against the Tigers of Macon County. The outcome of this game was far from the outcome of the first round. The Tigers started the game with a slight lead over the Bulldogs, with the first quarter ending and the Bulldogs down by 5. The Tigers continued their lead in the second quarter scoring another 8 points to the Bulldogs 5. When the first half of play came to a close, the Bulldogs were down by 8. The force the Tigers had the first half was doubled in the second. The Bulldogs were outscored by 17 points in the second half. The game ended with the Bulldogs losing by 25 points. With one more point, they would have lost by the same amount of points that they had beaten their previous competition, Jackson County, the night before. The Jr. High Bulldogs attempted 32 two point baskets, making 7, for 21.9%. Behind the three point line, they attempted 10. Unfortunately, they didn’t make any of them. The Jr. High Bulldogs shot 13 foul shots and hit 6 for 46.2%. Individual stats for the Jr. High Bulldogs:

Even though the Jr. High Bulldogs lost this game, they would drop in the bracket to play for third place in the Cumberland Rim Conference Tournament.

The RBS Jr. High Bulldogs played their third and final game of the CRC Tournament on Saturday, January 11 against the Clay County Jr. High Bulldogs. These two teams had recently faced one another a week prior to this matchup. In an exciting, nail biting game, the RBS Jr. High Bulldogs lost to the Clay County Bulldogs in that competition. This was not the case in their third meeting. The RBS Jr. High Bulldogs’ determination to beat this team showed throughout the entire game. At the end of the first quarter, the RBS Jr. High Bulldogs were down by 4. This was not acceptable for the RBS Jr. High Bulldogs. They turned the second quarter in their favor scoring 18 points, to their opponents 6, before going to the locker room. Steadily in the second half of the game the Clay County Bulldogs slowly climbed their way back into the game. The RBS Jr. High Bulldogs were able to hold on to their lead beating the Bulldogs of Clay County by 9. Scoring for the RBS Jr. High Bulldogs was #11 Elijah Byfield with 13, #25 Chase Long with 14, #30 Bailey Anderson with 7, #33 Michael Tirjan with 8, #34 Josh Tirjan with 4, and rounding out the score was #20 Justin Bergdorff with 2. With this win, the RBS Jr. High Bulldogs finished in 3rd place in the Cumberland Rim Conference Tournament.

The RBS Jr. High Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs have one final season game. They travel to Merrol Hyde Magnet School on Thursday, January 17, 2013. Game time is at 6:00
