New Macon County High School football coach Nathan Wilson is organizing a new support club for the team, after the disbanding of the longstanding Macon County Football Booster Club just last month.
A football support club has several functions: fundraising, organization of team activities along with food prep and planning, and general support/pep. This is what the old booster club did, along with the Quarterback Club, which was taken over by the booster club a few years ago.
“A support organization like this is so necessary,” said Wilson. “Running a good football program costs so much.” The old booster club donated all its leftover funds for the purchase of new shoulderpads and helmets. Wilson said he plans to have all the players in good gear this year.
There will be a meeting on Thursday, February 7 at 6 p.m. in the MCHS cafeteria to organize the new club, which will be called the Macon County Tiger Club. Items on the agenda: memberships will be taken, the bylaws will be read, and officers will be elected.
“Before, it was a case of just a few people in the club doing a bulk of the work,” said Wilson. “I want anyone who wants to be involved to come out. I feel we could really put a good club together, and keep everybody connected. Let everybody that wants to be, be a part of the football program. Whether they’re a parent, fan, or family member of a player—they can help give the kids the support they need.”
Wilson said that he’s gotten tremendous support from the community, and that excitement over the upcoming season seems to be growing: “I had a kid tell me the other day, ‘I miss the fellowship the team used to be.’ The players are ready to have that back.”
