A man was shot in Lafayette, TN at about 5:30 PM Thursday. The victim, according to TBI, was a Tommy Hillard, age 44, of 811 Due West Circle, Lafayette.

TBI released the following statement on Monday morning, about an arrest made Saturday in connection with the shooting.

"Tobey Wettig, 41, of 557 Church Street, Lafayette was arrested on one count of aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment. At approximately 5:30 p.m. on March 14, 2013, Wettig was driving home when an unknown motorist began driving close to him which angered Wettig. After Wettig turned into his driveway the other motorist continued toward the intersection of Church Street and Ellington Drive.

"Wettig parked his vehicle at the edge of his driveway, pulled out his handgun and fired in the direction of the other motorist hitting 44-year-old Tommy Hillard of Lafayette. Hillard was treated at the hospital and released on March 15, 2013. Wettig was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of reckless endangerment for shooting Hillard. The other four reckless endangerment charges are for four other individuals who were in the vicinity when the shooting occurred."

The shooting occurred in front of Lafayette Hometown Foods and Macon Christian Academy, in the intersection of Ellington Drive and Church Street. Hillard was shot while driving away from Hwy 52 on Ellington Drive, crossing over Church.

A male witness to the accident, who wished to remain anonymous, was going through the intersection the opposite way, and had just passed Hillard’s car when he heard the shots.

“My wife said ‘did you hear that? The window’s busted.’”

His wife, who was in the car with him, said she also saw the glass blow and heard the shots at about the same time: “I was on the passenger side and I was smoking so I had my window cracked. We were going, and he was going, and I heard a real loud pop and it sounded like it came from that direction [the right], and I said ‘Did you hear that?’ and after I said that I looked over at [my husband], when I said it, and I noticed that guy’s windows.

“It shattered the first one here, and then I saw it shattered on the other side, but I didn’t see the guy I the car. So we went up and dropped my daughter off at the tanning bed and came back. And he was already pulled over, some lady had already gotten him out of the car and he stood up. He was shot in the neck, and he stood up. He had blood all over him too. Somebody had run in the store to get something to put on her hands so she wouldn’t get blood on her.

“And they were trying to get him to sit down but he stood up and he goes, ‘who shot me?’—he was disoriented, you know. He goes ‘who shot me, who shot me in the neck?’ Then he finally set down, and then ended up laying down. By the time he was laying down the police came up. He was laying right at the end of his car.

“They were talking about some kind of artery that might have been hit, but I don’t know. He wasn’t gushing blood, but he was bleeding.”

Lafayette police units were on the scene minutes after the incident, and roped off the entire intersection. Hillard was taken by ambulance from the scene and flown by AirEvac to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. "I think he’s doing pretty good," said Lafayette Police Chief Stacy Gann. "I think he’s going to make a full recovery."

Hillard was released from the hospital on Friday, according to TBI.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assisted the Lafayette Police Department in the case, and on Saturday an individual was charged in connection with the shooting. Schools were all closed for Friday as a safety precaution while the shooter was unaccounted for.

Tobey Wittig of Lafayette, age 41, was charged by TBI after several hours of interviews and booked in the Macon County Justice Center, where he is being held for court. He is charged with one count of aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment.

"The Lafayette Police Department would like to thank all responding units," said LPD Lieut. Jason Roberts. "TBI, the Sheriff Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, EMS, Assistant DA Justin Harris, and DA Tommy Thompson, who was there that first night."

Roberts said that they received a call on a possible lead Friday evening, which lead to the arrest of Wittig. More information on the nature of the incident to follow.
