Denver Broncos rookie QB Tim Tebow, who often speaks to audiences across the nation, makes a point to always finish strong. The MCJHS Boys and Girls golf team must have adopted this motto as they have certainly finished strong.

Both the Macon County Junior High Boys and Girls Golf teams won the Tennessee Middle School Golf Association Regional Championships that were held in Murfreesboro, TN on May 13-14.

This was the highest possible finish for the golf team since the TMSAA has no state championships in any sport.

The Boys team had recently finished second in District play, falling short by twenty-six strokes. The Girls won the District and both teams earned a bid to play in the Regional Championship. Teams throughout the Middle District of Tennessee were represented at the Champions Run 18 hole event, including schools from Nashville, Sody Daisy, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Cleveland and more.

The Boys team trailed by nine strokes at the end of the day on Thursday, and came back on Friday, finished strong and won by four strokes.

The Girls team trailed by seven strokes to Rothview on Thursday, but came from behind on Friday, and won by a margin of two strokes.

Overall Macon County Junior High had three student athletes to be named to the All Region Team. Zach Polston and Larken Whittemore represented the Boys team while Kaitlin Cartwright was named to the Girls All Region team.

The MCJHS Girls won a non-TSSAA State Tournament last year, coach Beverly Shoulders said she would have liked to see how the teams would fare this year in that same tournament.

“Most of these golfers are eighth-graders this year.” said Shoulders. Should these golfers decide to play for the Macon County High School golf team in the upcoming season, they could potentially add to the already talented group. Always remember to finish strong.
